New Applications for Drivers and Transportation Service Providers at a Glance

The new ordinance regulates three key use cases:

  1. Highway Pilots: Drivers on highways can now activate a highway pilot that autonomously controls the vehicle. While constant monitoring of the vehicle and traffic is no longer required, drivers must remain ready to take over control at any time.
  2. Driverless Vehicles: On certain routes defined by the authorities, driverless vehicles may now be deployed. These vehicles must be monitored by a natural person (operator) from a central control center. The Swiss cantons are responsible for granting authorizations. The Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) will issue guidelines for assessing proposed routes and establish an advisory group that cantons can consult.
  3. Automated Parking: Automated parking without the driver’s presence is now permitted, however only within approved parking areas or garages.

Requirements and Approval Procedures

Automated vehicles are subject to strict safety requirements for approval. Manufacturers must ensure traffic safety and traffic flow. Cantonal authorities will decide on traffic permits. As of now, no vehicles in Switzerland meet these criteria.

A Step Into the Future

With the new ordinance, Switzerland is taking a step forward by defining regulations for automated driving and thereby paving the way for the introduction of modern technologies. This will not only transform mobility but also provide a boost to the economy.

The new Ordinance on Automated Driving will come into effect on March 1, 2025.
